Realistic starting pay sits between the 10th and 25th percentile — $22.17 to $26.45 per hour nationally. Where you land in that band depends on prior mechanical experience and any credentials you bring; most people cross the median within 3–5 years, and the jump from entry to mid-level is the largest percentage raise in the trade.

Per BLS OES, May 2025, the highest-paying states for maintenance mechanics are Wyoming ($37.66/hr median), Nevada ($37.38/hr median) and Alaska ($37.21/hr median). High-cost-of-living and union-dense states top the list, but plant-heavy lower-cost states often win on take-home purchasing power — a median wage goes further in the Midwest and South than the coastal figure suggests.

More than most trades — plants break at night and on weekends, and shutdowns/outages concentrate paid hours. A maintenance mechanic averaging 5 hours of overtime a week clears roughly $70,327 a year at the median rate; heavy-overtime sites (24/7 operations, annual outages) push total earnings past $77,424. Shift differentials of $1–$3/hr for 2nd/3rd shift stack on top of that.

USPS and federal maintenance mechanic jobs pay on published, union-negotiated scales with automatic step increases, so they're more predictable than private plants: starting pay is usually close to the private-sector median, and the real advantages are the pension, job security, and guaranteed progression. Private manufacturers tend to beat government pay at the top end — especially with overtime — but with more variance between employers.

Mostly the employer's word choice — both maintain and repair production equipment, and BLS counts them under one occupation (SOC 49-9041). Where a distinction exists, "industrial machinery mechanic" leans harder on rebuilding equipment (bearings, gearboxes, hydraulics) while "maintenance mechanic" often includes facility work. Pay for the machinery-focused roles runs slightly higher because the rebuild skills are scarcer.
