About the Role
This position is located within the Department of the Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 2, Mora National Fish Hatchery, Mora, New Mexico
Major Duties
- Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Completes repairs and preventive maintenance to building and facility electrical systems such as lighting and power fixtures, pumps, wells, blowers, backup generators, monitoring and alarm systems, wiring, fire or water alarm systems, and emergency power systems; includes 110V, 277V, 480V, 4/20mA, three phase and single phase, etc. Performs routine preventive maintenance on heating systems and refrigeration and air conditioning units. Examines and operationally tests electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems for proper operation, fluid levels, cycling, and unusual noises. Removes, replaces, and repairs defective components. Adjusts equipment controls, such as temperature sensors, thermostats, and leak detectors. Performs plumbing tasks to hatchery reuse systems, well pumping systems, and various buildings and structures. Operate various electric resistance welding machines such as spot, seam, and flash, or use a manual gas torch welding process such as oxyacetylene, to join a variety of different kinds of parts or components, and determine the welding techniques and machine settings to be used. Welds various metals, cast iron, and steel pipe in flat, curved, vertical and horizontal positions using oxygen-acetylene cutting torches, and metal inert gas (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG) and arc welders in the shop or field to repair, modify or fabricate parts or equipment. Applies standard measurements, specifications, and instructions when constructing, installing, or repairing items such as frame structures, decking, partitions, shelving, doors, forms, siding, and scaffolds. Measure, cut, construct, install, repair, and modify wood, composite, and wood substitute items to rough finishes. Uses and maintains tools and equipment, records inventory and maintenance, and reports/documents equipment damage or loss. Assists with spawning of broodstock; incubation of eggs; feeding, cleaning, and sample counting of fry and fingerlings; cleaning of raceways and tanks; distribution of eggs, fry, fingerlings, and adults; and the tagging and marking programs. Rotates on holding hatchery alarm phone and works unusual tour of duty such as weekend shift and occasional holidays.

Must maintain certification on all equipment operated Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a one year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
- Ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)

- Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
- Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading)
- Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: 50 miles from the official duty station in Mora, NM . Physical Demands: The employee uses considerable physical effort is required in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. The employee frequently is required to perform heavy lifting and exerts considerable physical effort while using hand and power tools. Work requires extensive leg, arm, and hand movement, standing, stooping, walking, bending, climbing, and kneeling, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance. The employee uses jacks, pulleys, dollies, or other lifting and carrying devices. Work may be from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, or high places, and in hard-to-reach places. Frequent arm and leg movements are required to operate controls, make repairs, and build items.Working Conditions: Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors/in the hatchery (95%). Works outside/in the hatchery in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and moving parts of equipment and machinery. Work performed outside is in a variety of settings where steep terrain, extremely uneven, rocky and slippery footing is normal. Temperature extremes are common. Employee is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises, falls, falling material, or injury from equipment associated with power equipment or hazardous materials. Work demands conformance to safety requirements including the use of a variety of personal protective equipment such as: protective clothing, hardhats, hearing protection, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, steel toe heavy leather boots, respirator, and other personal protective items. Serious injury may result from getting caught in operating equipment, or from collisions with automobiles when operating on or near public roads. Work is generally done on stable flat terrain and construction sites, but may be also done on rolling hills, minor slopes, grades, rocky or soft ground, or forests.
