U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a bureau of the Department of the Interior, is the only federal agency whose primary responsibility is conserving fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats. It manages more than 570 national wildlife refuges and roughly 70 national fish hatcheries with a workforce of about 8,000 employees. Its federal civilian maintenance staff keep refuge and hatchery infrastructure working, including water control structures, pumps, buildings, roads, heavy equipment, and visitor facilities at field stations across the country.
