Indian Health Service

The Indian Health Service, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, provides federal health services to approximately 2.6 million American Indians and Alaska Natives. IHS directly operates a network of hospitals, health centers, and health stations, largely in rural and reservation communities, with a workforce of roughly 15,000 employees. Its federal civilian maintenance workers keep hospital and clinic physical plants operating, including boiler, HVAC, electrical, water, and biomedical support systems, often at remote sites.
