You will serve as a Maintenance Worker at Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.

Major Duties

• Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: - Performs carpentry repairs and construction, including doors, windows, shelving, siding, steps, and other structural components using standard hand and power tools. - Applies paints, stains, and finishes on a variety of interior and exterior surfaces, assists with prep work, and maintains painting equipment. - Completes basic plumbing tasks such as replacing fixtures, valves, and pipes; winterizes systems; and performs limited electrical repairs using common trade tools. - Builds and repairs small concrete projects by setting simple forms, mixing and placing concrete, and performing basic finishing work with oversight. - Conducts masonry work of limited scope on historic or contemporary structures, preparing materials, repairing damaged sections, and documenting work performed. - Operates wastewater or water system equipment when required, monitoring gauges, recording data, collecting samples, and adjusting chemicals or flow rates according to instructions.

Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. QUALIFICATIONS:
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

1. ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A MAINTENANCE WORKER, WG-4749-7 WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION (SCREEN OUT) Have experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the full range of Maintenance Worker tasks in at least two of the trades listed assisting journeymen or other higher graded maintenance workers. Experience must be demonstrated in at least two of the following trades: Carpentry (constructs, installs, repairs and replace items such as doors, shelves, etc.); Painting (preparing surfaces, determine painting materials to be used and method of application, and painting a variety of surfaces); Plumbing (replace various valves, unions, elbows, fixtures, toilets, faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines, cut and thread pipes, winterize water systems, etc.); Roofing (repairs and patching, tar and paper, metal foam roofs and asphalt shingles); Electrical (repairs including removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating defective wiring and fixtures; Cement Finishing (building and setting forms for sidewalks and steps, mixes pours, spreads, and levels cement and concrete in preparation for final finishing; Masonry (maintenance, measures, determines amount of concrete, sets forms, pours and finishes concrete to blueprint standards and project specifications); Wastewater Plant Operator (monitoring equipment and gauges, performing routine tests, recording the results in reports, collecting samples, adjusting the rate of flow and amounts of chemicals to be used; Water Plant Operator (monitoring pumping equipment, regulating water, reading meters gauges and charts, recording readings and preparing reports).
